Lena Old Horn pulled the living-room drapes shut, then sat down in a big old chair. It was her reading chair, but she didn't turn on the lamp. She closed her eyes and tried to think of her schedule for Monday. She had a girl coming in who was a marginal college candidate. Lena suspected that she just wanted to get off the reservation, to get away. Was that a good enough reason to go down to Missoula and fail? To come back after six weeks, three months, six months? Then what? What could Lena say on Monday that would make a difference in the girl's life? What about all the other lives that she would touch in the coming years?
Sylvester Yellow Calf. Young, squatting on his heels on the bank of Four Horns Reservoir, the wind lifting and blowing his thick black hair. He had been her friend in a way no one else had. He would never know it but he had made her feel confident, bright, a young woman of sex and substance. When he went away to college, she read about his basketball career in the Great Falls Tribune and she knew she had lost the little piece of his life that she had occupied. And she was hurt. He never contacted her when he came to Browning. She knew when he was in town. She had seen him a couple of times on the street but she never acknowledged him. Once she had come out of the drugstore and he was standing there, his back to her, signing autographs for some grade-schoolers. It would have been so easy to go to him and say hello. But she walked to her car and sat there, watching him banter with the children. When he turned her way, she leaned over, pretending she was looking for something in the glove compartment. At that moment, it became too late. They became strangers, and had remained so until today.
Why had she acted that way, then and today? Could she have been that hurt that she couldn't give him her enthusiasm, her encouragement? And why had he come? Was it really for her advice?
Lena rubbed her eyes with her palms and she could feel the difference between them, the slightly depressed socket lower than the other. She hadn't had much luck with men. Even Stan. But she had dumped him, not long after Sylvester left for college. For some reason, Stan was no longer interesting to her. Surprisingly, when they did meet on the the street or in some establishment, they talked about Sylvester, as though he had left some gap between them that neither could cross over. He had hurt them both. The broken nose became a symbol of betrayal to Stan. He left town after the next school year and she had not seen nor heard from him since.
Fraidy jumped up on her lap and she hugged him to her. "Fraidy, Fraidy," she crooned. "Are you hungry, dear?"
